A Parable

“Why so sad?” asked the Eagle to the Fish

“I’m sad because I tread these depths of never ending waters without anyone to share it with.”

The Eagle was surprised by this as he knew very well there were other fish down below so, he asked how one could feel so alone.

The Fish replied, “It’s as if I can’t really feel the closeness of another, even though I once did. I feel as if I have cursed myself into a cycle of believing I need to swim alone. I’m fearful that I cannot break this.”

The eagle felt the Fish’s desperation and took a vow to help her overcome this ongoing cycle she had created for herself.

“My lady Fish you will no longer need to take this journey by yourself under those depths you live in. I will be there to help you through your path and I will never leave you. I will always stand by your side.”

But the fish was confused. “How can you be this for me when you live among the sky.  For a shadow is the only thing I see when reflected upon the surface of my dwelling. So, how can this be?”

“Ah that is not for you to question,  just know and trust that wherever you swim to, I shall fly with you. I shall beat my wings against the wind as fast as you will flap your fins against the current and my own reflection is the shadow that you shall see upon the surface.”

The Fish was content to know that she would not take this journey alone after all and, even though her dear eagle could not join her in the depths of the sea, for now her heart was at peace knowing that he would mirror her every step .

So that day they made a pact. The Eagle would be there to help her swim through the waters of her loneliness with affection and, she in turn would guide him through the sky of endless possibilities with freedom.

And when the time was right for them to merge, the Fish’s fins would turn into wings and she would alas join her dear Eagle on their flight back Home together, at last.
